Ornamental vessel

The vase consist of three pieces: the round, high, curved and rimmed plinth supports the bulging vase that has a ringed foot, straight shoulder-line and a spindle-shaped neck. The separate, domed cover has a drop-shaped finial. Both the form and the painted ornaments follow the decoration of Rouen faience made between 1720 and 1740, though in this case the motifs are stencilled. The red parts of the motifs are hand-painted, which releases the severity of the pattern and lends the vase an artistic atmosphere. The decoration is repeated symmetrically. The gaps between the horizontal geometrical and partly flowery friezes and the column-like, vertical flowery divisions are filled with typical Rouen motifs. The plinth and the vase show lambrequins with garlands and baskets of flowers the neck is decorated with a bunch. The cover is lacy (composed of upturned lambrequins), enriched with flower stems.
