The plain, short, cylindrical foot support a ball body with straight, high neck the top rim is slightly splaying. The surface is cannelured like oriental dishes of bamboo, fixed with five bulging belts. The monochrome glaze in the dents have a darker, on the rims a lighter shade, thus the relief effect of the surface is enhanced. Theodore Deck introduced his famous transparent glazes coloured in the material in 1884 at the exhibition of the Union Centrale des Arts Decoratifs. Among them there was a turquoise colour which was later called Deck-blue. He developed his polychrome glazes with the close study of the Chinese (like in this case) and of the Persian ceramic arts, coupled with the innovation or revival of techniques that had so far been unknown in Europe. An analogous pair of vases can be found in the Musée Cantini in Marseille, with Inv.Nos. 1640-1641. Published in Brigitte Hedel-Samson's exhibition catalogue to Theodore Deck. Musée Cantini, Marseille, 1980, Nos. 62-63, p.33).
