Round base: the short stem is in the form of a tree-trunk, and the bowl is an owl. The head of the owl serves as the detachable cap of the flagon. The surface of the bowl is chiselled with featherlike motifs. There is an applied cartouche under the head, with the engraved coat of arms and name of the owner: Christoph Haffner. The rim of the bowl shows an etched minuscule inscription that can only be seen when lifting the cap: Ich arme Mais macht mir der Kautz so angstig Hals (I am a pitiable mouse the little owl gives me such a stifling feeling). The text is somewhat puzzling. It refers to caution and temperance and recalls 16th century German sayings however, no definite source for it is known. Marked with maker's sign.
