Ornamental vase

The veined, marbled glass follows faithfully the shape of the aphoriscos (an amphora-like dish, slightly smaller, used for storing oil or cream, produced in Egypt and Cyprus around 1350 B.C. and later, after a long interval, on eastern Mediterranean territories, in 600-100 B.C.). The millefiori decoration was already known in Alexandria in the first century B.C. and was also applied in Rome in the first century. A variant of this type was fairly wide-spread in the sixteenth century, as Venetian- Murano glass technique. This vase follows antique models in its shape and Venetian-Murano traditions (also modelled on antique ornaments) in its decoration.
