Ornamental plate - depicts the 1843 fire in the Herend factory

The round dish has a rising, broad rim. The border of the rim is decorated with delicate, gilt branches, the bottom rim shows scrolling tendrils. The surface depicts the 1843 fire in the Herend factory with three lines of cursives below: Brand der Herender Porzellain-Fabrick in der Nacht vom 27t. auf den 28t März. There is a mark and a date impressed on the bottom, the latter repeated twice: Herend, 843. A typical motif of the painted scene is the name of the founder on the signboard of the building, flanked by two escutcheons: one shows the double-headed eagle, while the Hungarian coat of arms, used in Kossuth's time, can be detected, with the help of a magnifying glass, on the other. There is another dish commemorating the 1843 fire in the factory, which is now in the museum of the Herend Factory. It is painted with a Gothic inscription and the building seems to be more archaic than on the piece described above. When comparing the two dishes, it is apparent that after the 1843 fire the factory was not only reconstructed but modernized and equipped with new frontals. Therefore, it is obvious that the exhibited dish can only have been produced between 1843 and 1849.
