Ornamental jug

The round, cylindrical foot supports a bulging, carafe-shaped body, ending in a cup-shaped top rim. The hollow handle starts in a horizontal line from the top, bends at an angle and is connected to the middle of the body. The content of the jug can be drunk through the hole placed on the corner of the handle, just like in the case of the famous Hungarian folklore carafes. The engraved and painted decoration is also typically Hungarian, an Art Nouveau interpretation of the motifs used by the "national decoration" of the 1890s. The surface is dark violet-bronze from the foot to the juncture of the handle the top is matte, ivory coloured. The foot is enriched with four squares of palm-shaped golden-green leaves springing from them, surmounted by violet hearts in the middle and bent red and violet tulips curving to both sides. The tops of the tulips bear four small, golden- green flowers, twined. The top is decorated with four red hearts. The drawing No.7279 in the Zsolnay factory Façon book is signed by Henrik Darilek (DH) but the real designer and date is given in the following remark «Abt Sándor tervei 1904 X» (Designs by Sándor Abt 10/1904). Several similar models were designed by Abt and Darilek, from No. 7113 to 7352. The artists were most likely advised by the factory management to use more of the traditional decorations. The M in the oval on the bottom refers probably to Lajos Mack, who was likely to have made the vase after Apáti-Abt's model.
