The portrait shows the empress in a white dress decorated with gold. She wears a pearl coronet, necklace and earrings. There is an engraved inscription on the back of the frame: Josephine de Tascher La Pagerie Imperatrice des Francais.
Saint made a number of miniatures of Josephine a similar one is now in the Cleveland Museum of Art, showing the empress dressed in the same way, and almost in the same position, but with a different background (see here).
