The grisaille-painted leaf and its wallpaper-like chinoiserie ornamentation with wavy lines and wavy flowering branches are interrupted in the middle by a horizontally stretched medallion of irregular shape. In the medallion is portrayed a garden idyll with three figures. On the verso there is a small island with trees and wooden railings. The surface afforded by the sticks when the fan is open exhibits grey and blue flowering tendrils. On the upper part of the guard-sticks is a pagoda among flowers. The rough-and-ready painting and the simple execution relate this fan to pieces at the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum and the Museum of Fine Arts at Boston, Mass.
