The leaf, painted in hues of dominant brown and green, depicts Venus and Mars sitting opposite each other on an island with trees and bushes. Venus is pointing to Amor seated a little further off, on the left side of the leaf Mars is leaning on his lance. To the right stands a young female figure. In the background is level country, which ends in a range of hills. On the top of a hill is a castle, with a cluster of buildings beneath it. On the verso, beneath trees, sits Diana holding a quiver. In the midst of the chinoiserie ornamentation on the sticks-grid, flower and vase motifs-there is a male and a female figure. Beneath their pierced, figural and pagoda carvings the guard-sticks are covered with mother-of-pearl.
