The leaf, which is made up of a combination of silk and gold net, has palmette-shaped, Empire-style ornamentation. Gilded and steel spangles of various shapes—disks, almonds, double-looped chain-links, stars, triple-looped braiding, and flowers—trace a butterfly surrounded by lobular leaves with festoons of leaves on either side. The motifs are linked together by a thin golden cord describing loops. The bottom and top arches of the leaf are edged with picot. The inlay on the sticks is arranged to form single lines or lines with flower-like features.
