The fan, made from cropped, coloured feathers, exhibits a pattern of brown and white spots and then purple-edged blotches (colours listed from bottom to top). Additional similar fans, although with different coloration, are MAA inv. nos. 59.834 and 59.990 (Cat. Nos. 178, 179).
