The decoration of the front and back plates is identical: the surface is framed by gilt lines, showing a rosette in the middle, with Grolier-style, plaited foliage and ribbons springing from it, applied of red, green and black leather with pressed gilt rims. The spine is enframed with gilt lines, divided into two small compartments at the top and a large one at the bottom. The middle compartment bears the gilt title: GALIBERT / L'ALGERIE. The others are enriched with gilt leather applications, showing foliage and ribbon plaits. The edges of the plates are also gilt. The leather frame of the French-style leather-jointed endpaper is gilt the inner red field is decorated with gilt French lilies. The other pages of the endpaper are of blue moiré silk, with gilt page and traces of earlier painting. The page mark is made of red silk. The cover plate is illustrated with a copper engraving of César Auguste Hébert, modelled on the original of Auguste Raffet (1804-1860). It is marked Raffet HEBERT. The illustrations were made by Adolphe (1810-1870?) and Emile (1795-1865) Rouargue, after the originals of Raffet and Francois-Auguste Biard (1798/99-1882). A coloured, engraved map of Algeria is bound to the back of the book, made by Ambroise Tardieu (1788-1841) and Auguste J.B.M. Blanchard (1792-1849).
