Black stained figure sitting on an "L" shaped wooden base his limbs are shackled, the lower part of his body is veiled: There is a bronze cartouche on the rear side of the base with engraved minuscule inscription: "Christiadum columen Splendens / et nobilis Ordo / In te quos recipis multum Sustollis/ et ornas/ Noster Borbonius Princeps / te vero decorat". The insription is probably eulogizes the natural son of one of the members of the French dynasty, Francois-Louis de Bourbon, Prince Conti (1664—1709). The figure is probably a bozzetto of a memorial made in 1709, or of the accessory figure of a planned memorial. It is the pair of Cat. No. 2.57. According to earlier opinions the work is to be attributed to a follower of the Florentine Giovanni Battista Foggini. This supposition is mainly based on the stylistically more or less analogous statues of chained Saracen or Turkish figures (Munich, Bayerisches Nationalmuseum), which were the accessory to the equestrian statue of Joseph I.
