Inkwell

The ink well is shaped like a sarcophagus, standing on four paw feet, over a rectangular plinth. The inside shows a horizontal, relief figure of Napoleon, dressed in uniform. The inlet holds the two bowls (for the ink and the powder), covered with a roof of arcoterion corniche and tympanums on the four sides. The top of the roof is made of repousse motifs: the typical Napoleon hat and a sword. Among the documents of the Schönborn iron foundry of Munkacs, the ink well imitating the coffin of Napoleon (tintenfess mit Napoleon) first appears in 1843. It most likely followed foreign models, arriving through Austria, since there is another casting decorated with the sarcophagus and figure of Francis I.
