House Altar

The four-lobed base is decorated with the figures of the evangelists the node is a cast silver relief of the Pieta. The middle part is a triptych with folding wings and a predella. It is decorated with varied ornamentation and a pierced top, showing a cast silver figure of Christ. The outer sides of the wings were decorated with silver figures of Mary and the Archangel Gabriel (the latter now missing), in an Annunciation scene. The miniatures were made by Anton Mozart of Augsburg, marked but illegible they show the Adoration of the Shepherds, the Adoration of the Magi, and the Circumcision. There are many similar pieces, also from the workshop of Matthias Walbaum, to be found in various religious and public collections in Europe and America. These are listed in the work of Regina Löwe. Marked with the maker's sign. The parchment stuck to the foot of the altar bears an inscription, hardly legible: MICHAEL EHAM (?) VIENENSIS AUSTRIAC(US) ...AVLICVS CONSILIARI(US) CAESARIS RVDOLPHIII. PER XX. AN(N)OS DEDICAVIT HOC PIVM ...MONASTERIO AD S. MARIAM DE ANGELIS VIENAE AVSTRIAE DE PERPETVA MEMORIAM AN(N)0... which refers to the fact that the piece was presented to a monastery by its original owner.
