The cylindrical cup is lined with masks. The body is decorated with vine tendrils with large leaves and fruits. There is an inscription just below the top rim: VINO MISCET AQVAM IAM SATIS IPSE DEVS. Jules-Paul Brateau's pewter cups and other table dishes of slightly different sizes and shapes were introduced first at the 1897 Paris Salon: there was one with a pomegranate blossom, one with olives, one with wheat, one with trefoils, and one with mistletoe. The cup with vine and masks, reflecting the influence of Italian Renaissance, also belongs to this series its companion piece can be found in the Museum fur Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg (Inv.No. 1900, 255). Other examples of the cup were also exhibited at the 1900 Paris International Exhibition and at the 1902 Torino International Exhibition. Further pieces of the series can be found in the collection of the Budapest Museum of Applied Arts, with Inv.Nos. 51, 52a-b, and 53.
