Surreal figures, like this stylized but spirited Green Pig, recur throughout the sculpture and painting of the contemporary glass artist Mihály Melcher. He makes his glass sculptures by a special technique he calls zömítés ["compression"]. This consists of gradually melting pieces of broken glass, some as small as grains of powder, into a negative plaster mould in a furnace. It is an idiosyncratic combination of the casting and pâte-de-verre techniques.
