The bulging, bun-shaped body has a broad top rim that softly bends inwards. Five large silk-moths, painted in iridescent red, purple and brown in a delicately shaded, naturalistic way. The silky body of the pot with melted purple-blue, brown, gold and green create the atmosphere of a mysterious nocturnal scene. This object can be identified with No. 6548 in the Zsolnay Façon book 10. There is no remark as to the identity of the designer however, a bowl with two butterflies, No. 6402, was signed by Mihály Kapás-Nagy. It is therefore supposed, on stylistic grounds, that in this case he was not only the draftsman but also the designer of the object. Most likely Mihály Nagy Kapás (September 28th 1863 – January 1st 1943, Pécs) designed this “jardiniere” to hold flowerpots in representative interiors. The secession artistic ceramics of the Zsolnay factory frequently formed symbolic, stylised scenes that were at the same time refined with naturalistic details. The deep blue eosin glazed vessel reminds us of mysterious nights with the “peacock eye” butterflies resting on its gently folding sides.
