Tankard with cover

The round, jointed foot is decorated with leaves, supporting a cylindrical body which shows the repousse scene of the Rape of the Sabin women. The rising, lid has a ball finial it is decorated with war scenes between Roman and savage soldiers. The jointed handle shows a relief female figure, with a mask below. The inside of the lid show the coat of arms of György Bánffy and his wife, Klára Bethlen, dated 1691. The original, silver-gilt, hammered, cast and chiselled tankard was made in the seventeenth century and was once owned by the Protestant Church of Debrecen.
