Fan

An acanthus-leaf pattern runs along the upper edge of the leaf, which is uncoloured. The surface of the leaf is filled out by a row of circular medallions alternating with classical motifs decked with trailing acanthus. In the medallions, each framed by spangles and a series of intersecting arches, there used to be scenes, although today only one figure can be made out in one of them. The trailing acanthus, the festoons and the edge of the leaf were formerly embellished with spangles. As regards the painting, the dominant colours are black, red and pink. The mark is in the bottom right: Mathieu fee. The signature can probably be attributed to the French copper engraver Jean Mathieu (1749—1815), who is mentioned in a Graz source in 1797. The sticks are unadorned.
