On the upper parts of the sticks, those above the ribbon, can be seen two series (from left to right and from right to left) of allegorical figures representing the Arts and Sciences. On each of the two guard-sticks stands Minerva, on guard. At her feet is an empty escutcheon—rather like a pedestal—, along with putti playing amidst flowers. Across those parts of the sticks below the ribbon is a pierced band of moderately S-shaped embellishments framed by leaf-and-berry and rose patterns. The leaves are flat carved, while the guard-sticks are high carved.
