At the top, the leaf—which was once probably light blue but which has now faded to grey—is embellished with intertwined motifs: a broad gilded serpentine motif and a coloured flower (lily and pansy) motif. At the bottom, in the space between every second pleat, there were originally spangles sewn in slanting rows one above another, broadening towards the top and modelling a piece of twisted column. Of these nine have been cut off their places have been taken by pieces of uncoloured silk. On the sticks, which are black, there is gilding: stars and wavy lines. The pattern on the guard-sticks cannot be made out. At the bottom end of the guard-sticks there is bone inlay. Close in age and technique are the pieces MAA inv. nos. 65.285 and 59-898 (Cat. Nos. 81 and 86).
