At the top the ivory-coloured sticks end in a pattern resembling ribbons crossing each other. When open the fan exhibits interconnected ornamentation filling its entire surface: pairs of doves kissing among lattice- patterned scallop motifs on either side of a wild rose branch. The same motifs are repeated on the guard- sticks. A silver chain and ring are attached to the handle. The ribbon links in the chain are pink. The careful working and the use of precious metal permit the conclusion that this piece is a relatively early one, dating from a time soon after the discovery of celluloid (1869).
