This simple, label-like bookmark was made for an American collector, Georges May Elwood. Inspite of its simplicity it is fairly decorative due to the unshaded spots (the lady in the hat with a book in her hand is only a black spot on the white surface, except her face, the page of the book and the hand that are left white), and to the strict lines (asymmetrically arranged, definite contours of highly stylized trees). The poster-like picture recalls the style of Bonnard and Nicholson.
