Hirzel was a Swiss artist who spent a long time in Berlin and made several works for contemporary Berlin collectors. His ex libris pieces are usually dominated by realistic landscapes, with decorative borders. He uses plant elements but preserves their main botanical features. The ex libris made for Carl Busse is characterised by the strong, black border.
