Ex-libris (bookplate) - Fanny Nelson

The motifs of the picture - the figure with halo, angels and lilies - recall the iconography of Christian art. In this case, they are elements of a vertical composition in gold, black and white: the innocent figure of a reading lady, with angels around her head. The owner’s name is shown in the halo. The slimness of the figure and the verticality are emphasised by the long lily stem on the right, the symbol of purity, which is also characteristic of Pre-Raphaelite works of art and their master models of the Quattrocento, especially Botticelli.
