The tapering cylindrical body stands on a short, small foot. The conical cover is divided into two parts and is equipped with a bun finial. The matte, glazeless surface is decorated by the different colouring of the material and with refined relief motifs. The body and the lower part of the cover are checked an olive branch with berries is used as a dividing or framing motif both horizontally and vertically. Its fairly detailed engraving resembles the fine elaboration of antique gemmas. The row of palmets around the foot and the row of elongated leaves around the finial are equally elaborate. A four-leaved, yellow, applied motif protrudes from the white checks.
Jasper dishes of three colours, with identical material, technique and decoration were already made between 1780 and 1810. A tobacco casket in the Wedgwood collection, similar to the object described above and made between 1880 adn 1900, was published by Robin Reilly (see Wedgwood Vol. I, picts. 1022- 1026, pict. C. 70, Vol. II, pict. C. 67). The pieces made a hundred years later are differentiated from their ancestors by the use of the ENGLAND mark. The country mark was introduced in 1891 by the McKinley Tariff Act, in accordance with the American Consumers' Regulation.
