Ornamental plate

The Renaissance plate-type called tonclino, that is, a plate with a straight, broad rim and a small surface, is richly painted in white, ochre, a little green and terracotta colours against the blue base, using mainly Late Renaissance motifs. The centre is enclosed by a geometrical frieze it depicts a winged female half-figure, with foliage stemming from her trunk towards both sides, ending in dolphins. The rim is also lined with a geometrical frieze, and is decorated with a rich grotesque decoration repeated four times, connected with winged female figures, palmets, books and dragon motifs. Ákos Kiss published these plates as imitations of Renaissance dishes made in Faenza between 1515 and 1530. He dates the objects to 1880.
