Goblet with cover - Zrinyi's heroic last stand

The goblet is placed on a round, short stem with fifteen lobes it has a similar division, although it is cylindrical inside. The cover also has fifteen lobes it is faceted into eight sides, equipped with a finial. The cup shows a lying oval medallion, with an engraved intaglio of many figures against a purple base, showing Zrinyi's heroic last stand. The scene is very detailed the soldiers are dressed in period clothes. There is a cursive inscription, engraved in lilac stain at the bottom of the medallion: „Oppitz Kassan” (Oppitz in Kassa). On the opposite side, there is a small, round medallion, framed by lilac stain, showing the engraved inscription: „Emlek Anyamtol 1847” (A souvenir from my mother). The scene is likely to have had an engraving model, as yet unidentified. A similar scene decorates the goblet of August Böhm, made around 1835, which reproduces a painting of Johann Peter Kraft, a painter of Vienna. However, the goblets of Oppitz and Böhm have little in common, apart from the similar topic of the engraved decoration. Jozsef Oppitz was probably born in Bohemia, for there were several glass engraver families with the name Oppitz, around Haida and Steinschonau. He was first a dealer then a guild-master in Kassa previously, around 1820, he had worked at the glass works of Kokova and Antalvolgy.
