The sword was made for Janos Nepomuk Tóth (1833-1865), the leading professor of the Saint Roch Hospital. The hilt shows the coat-of-arms of Hungary and Transylvania, under lion, female herm, fruit garland and palmet motifs. There is also an oval cartouche depicting a bust of Ferenc Rákóczi II and probably of Janos Nepomuk Tóth in Hungarian gala clothing. The black leather shield is decorated with mounted silver leaves and reliefs of leaders and warriors. The analogous piece, the sword of György Bernáth, can be found in the collection of the Budapest Museum of Applied Arts (Inv.No. 4696).
