Díszkard hüvellyel

This ornamental sword was made for György Bernáth (1798-1875), the deputy clerk of Pest county. The curved blade is etched with arabesque. The hilt and the sheath are chased and chiselled against a punched base. The hilt ends in a repousse lion head one of the cross-bars ends in a leaf, the other in a ram head. Between them, there are two medallions on both sides, surrounded by acanthus leaves. The medallions show the Hungarian and Transylvanian coat-of-arms, with the portrait of Ferenc Rákóczi II and probably of György Bernáth below. The sheath is lined with a narrow border of leaves and flowers, and shows the idealized figures of six Hungarian leaders, placed among mounted acanthus leaves and flowers. There are two circular hooks at the bottom, with an inscription in cursives: "T. Bernáth Györgyé / Szentpéteri József készítette 1844." (For his Lordship Gy. B. / made by J. Sz.).
