The design shows a four-lobed bowl with a twisted ornament on the top and foot rim. The disc-shaped foot is connected to the slightly conical stem with four curved supports that end in stylized leaves. The top third of the stem is decorated with rings, holding the bowl with four, curved supports. Two of them create the handles on the sides, ending in an open bunch of leaves, while the other two are continued in a pierced band. The shape of the supports and handles reflects the floral ornaments
of early French Art Nouveau, while the pierced band imitates Empire table decorations. The lobes of the bowl follow the taste of „eclecticism". The dating of the drawing is helped by the signature and the remarks in the original inventory. The artist signed his „Neorococo” stove design from 1897 as Pál Hirth. We also know from the Decorative Drawing School that in the year 1898-99 he changed his name to Horti, with official permission, which means that a drawing with HORTI signature must have
been made after this date. According to the remark in the inventory book lists this design as one of the twenty-three nineteenth century „modem” cup designs, so it was probably made before the turn of the century. It was exhibited at the 1903 spring interior exhibition of Hungarian Society for Applied Arts. It was given an important role, being part of a dining room designed entirely by Pál Horti, which was the grand prize of the raffle. One of the drawings in the collection of the Budapest
Museum of Applied Arts (see Cat. 9.243) shows the sketch of the stemmed bowl, while on a photo the realized piece was the ornament of the laid table, made by the Bachruch silverware factory.
