Chocolate pot

Chocolate as a drink made from cocoa beans comes from Mexico Spanish conquistadors took them home in the 1520s. It became popular in the rest of Western Europe only from the second half of the 17th century. Chocolate in its early form had to be boiled and stirred constantly to froth up the thick drink and keep the sediment from settling. The use of the chocolate pot needed both hands: the hinged lid could be left opened for the stirring stick to stir the drink before pouring. The straight handle is often set at right angles to the spout to facilitate pouring.
