Several chess sets were included in the successful Craft and Design exhibition of the Museum (17 November 2008 – 11 January 2009) including this one, donated to the museum by the artist. The elements of the set are stored in an accurate order in a finely finished wooden box with the designer’s mark. The board is made of varnished stainless steel, while the aluminum tube figures are shaped by minimal cutting. The unusual materials, the use of semi-finished industrial products and design reflecting upon and adjusted to them result in a set that contrasts with the realm of traditional carved wooden chess sets. Every detail of the elements is carefully designed and executed with great mastery. The work is a product of the artist’s attraction to minimalism.
