The four baluster-shaped legs are joined by stretchers. The pierced back support is composed of vertical rods and horizontal splines of disks. The cresting of the chair is voluted the stiles end in small knobs. The origin of this type of chair is assumed by Bode, Schotmüller, Feulner and Windish-Graetz to be the second half of the 16th century. The last-named thinks this piece is Italian from the early 17th century. Ferenc Batári, on the other hand, suggests it was made in the Netherlands, in the 17th century. Companion pieces can be found in the ex-Figdor Collection in Vienna, in the Kunstgewerbe Museum of Berlin, in the ex-Lanz Collection in Amsterdam, in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Magdeburg, and in the Castello Sforzesco in Milan.
