The oval back is characteristic of Hepplewhite furniture. The pieces described above were parts of a set they arrived at the museum at different points in time, although from the same owner.
It's companion piece is an armchair (inv.nr. 53.1816.) The four square tapered legs are tied by horizontal stretchers on the sides, which are connected with a third one. The seat is semicircular the arm-supports are curved. The two front legs and the supports are enriched with garlands. A narrow lath is placed in the middle of the oval back its bottom is pierced, while the top third is carved with an urn in an oval frame of garlands and ribbons. The chair is identical with the armchairs, without the arm rests.
