Cabinet

The plinth conceals two drawers. The prismatic body is flanked by two carved columns on the sides between them there is a two-winged door, each wing decorated with two Japanese-style bo-ne inlays, flanked by caryatides. The top is jointed, decorated with mask carvings, a figural rail and profiled corniches. The sides are also richly ornamented, with architectural parts. The left inlay shows the inscription WIEN while the right presents the date 1877. Inside, there are eight small drawers, with arabesque intarsia of exotic kinds of wood. The panels on the inner side of the door- wings are also inlaid with R Volkel on the left and J. Eder on the right.
According to Himmelheber, Viennese furniture from 1874-1881 present us with all the characteristics of the age: a combination of the Renaissance features with other model elements and a free raking of decoration. A companion cabinet was published by Himmelheber, which had been manufactured between 1875 and 1880, according to the plans of the Viennese Wielmans von Nonteforte, the architect of the Justizpalast (see Kreisel-Himmelheber, pict. 830). The cupboard described above can regarded a companion piece, though it is a great deal simpler.
