Cabinet

A simple, prismatic form. The back, the front and the sides have the same decoration: squares and square-shaped chess-board strap work in the corners. The front doors show a coloured bird on a leaved bough in the middle and so-called "prism" motifs in the corners. On the borders of the doors are mounts, the nails of which give the impression of braces. On the inner sides of the doors there are mounted frames on a dark base (tarsia a incastro), with profiled inlays showing a figure of a hunter, each in a rusticated background. The figures are dressed in trunk-breeches, jackets with a large round collar, and a hat with broad brim and feathers. They carry guns and a dagger on their sides, a rope with spear or a fishing rod, and a powder horn in their belts. The motifs of the bird sitting on a flowery bough of heart-shaped leaves and the unsophisticated nature of the mounts prove that this cabinet came from a Tyrolese workshop. The hunter figures also suggest this group of furniture-makers.
