Book - Klopstock, Friedrich Gottlieb: Werke. Erster Band: Oden. Leipzig, 1798

The black strap frame of the front plate shows an ornament of wavy lines and leaved boughs, between two gilt lines. The corners are decorated with rosettes. The surface inside the black border is decorated with a batik line of palmettes, then another black strap frame, enclosed with a gilt double line. The middle of the front plate is marbled, framed with a gilt line of urns. The saddle is divided into one large and four small fields, divided by gilt lines and waves the middle field shows gilt foliage, flowers and urns, with a black, oval leather application, gilt with a spider net pattern. The middle of the first and fifth fields show gilt oval decoration. The second and fourth fields are applied with red leather, showing the gilt title: Klopstocks Werke/Oden III. The French-style, orange endpapers are framed with gilt leather. The headband is sewn of blue, white and pink thread the ribbon is pink silk. Gilt engravings. The bookbinding described above is attributed to Ferenc Schatten, a book-binder from Gyor, by Margit J. Halasz, on the basis of Eva B. Koroknay's study. She dates the time of manufacture to the early 19th century.
