The light red velveteen is covered with printed dark red patterns repeated twice horizontally on the fabric. The pattern consists of tendrils with knots, bent in an upturned heart shape, enclosing a three-pointed coronet. The tip of the tendril hearts are surmounted by five-lobed palmets, with three smaller palmets and a rosette in their centre. The space between these motifs is filled with small palmets, rosettes and acanthus flowers. The fabric was modelled on sixteenth century Venetian "pile-on-pile" velvets, which can be found in several textile collections such as the one in the Musees Royaux d'Art et d'Histoire in Brussels (see Errera 1927 No.221), or in the (Gandino) Museo della Basilica in Bergamo (see Tessuti serici italiani 1450-1530.
