Armchair - MR

Its main frame is made of one dynamic, bent tube with a thin stiffening rod across. The other steel tube, anchored with rivets, surrounding the back from behind, making up the armrest is parallel to it. The armchair was made based on the designs of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886–1969), one of the greatest figures of modern architecture and design. Model MR20, manufactured in the 1930s by Thonet and after 1977 by Knoll International continuously, is one of the boldest and most elegant consol tube chairs. It was presented in 1927 in Weißenhofsiedlung in Stuttgart. It was also produced without an armrest, with leather upholstery and cane sitting surface.
In 20th century design, new material played a key role in the creation of most significant pieces. The appearance of steel tubes meant a breakthrough in furniture design, especially in the case of sitting furniture. The first successful models of tube furniture, meeting the aesthetics of functionalism, emphasizing clear lines, were made in the middle of the 1920s they are attributed to Marcell Breuer, teaching at Bauhaus. By the end of the century all significant designers from the French Le Corbusier to the Italian Guiseppe Terragni designed steel tube furniture.
