A characteristic type of Ottoman rugs is the "Transylvanian" double niche rug. Several variants of the type fashionable for over two centuries are known. Its common feature is the hexagonal medallion filling the central field created by mirroring the original mihrab (prayer niche) of the traditional prayer rug across the central axis. The carpet is a fine example of the rare single niche version of "Transylvanian" rugs. Its red mihrab (prayer niche) is filled with a floral-foliate scroll symmetric about the long axis, and a mosque lamp hangs from the peak of the mihrab. The spandrels are decorated by a large rosette and serrated leaves on a dark blue field. In the border, "Transylvanian" cartouches alternate with eight-pointed stars.
