The source of Ferenc Helbing's early designs is the folklore: following József Huszka he mainly preferred the stylized rose, the so-called "plumet of peacock" motif and other floral ornaments, thought to be the most ancient and Hungarian among the varied motifs. Sometimes, the crossings and continuity of the lines recalls the frogs-and-loops and other string decoration of Hungarian gala folklore clothing.
